"The Maze Runner" by James Dashner

Author of The Maze Runner, James Dashner, has created an intriguing dystopian novel full of mystery and excitement. Sure to have you craving for more, this unique journey starts with a teenager named Thomas with no reminiscence of his past. Arriving in the Glade, a village-like area located in the middle of a maze, Thomas is given a brief introduction of this new place by the Gladers. Every morning the stone walls of the maze open then at night they close and those who are out in the maze at night are never seen alive again. “Out there’s the maze,” Newt whispered, eyes wide as if in a trance, “Everything we do—our whole life, Greenie—revolves around the maze…”But when a girl arrives the day after Thomas, this triggers a chain reaction that the Gladers and Thomas may not be ready to take on.

With its likable protagonist and captivating plot, this novel was a suspenseful and quick read. However, it did have a handful of missed opportunities to further develop the characters and soon lost momentum in its last few pages. Nevertheless, The Maze Runner will leave fans of Hunger Games and dystopian novels wanting for more once the last page has been turned.
