Clay, in Jay Asher's novel “Thirteen Reasons Why,” is astonished when he finds within Hannah Bakers tapes, that he is one of the thirteen reasons why, she is dead. As Clay listens to each cassette, he follows along with the map Hannah marked for all the places where the reasons took place. What Hannah Baker has to say to Clay leaves him with the need to talk to her just one last time. Clay had left Hannah with the simple thought, “Why did I listen? Why did I leave her there? She needed me and I knew that” (216). Clay comes to a conclusion that Hannah pushed away all the people she needed the most. Is that why she recorded the tapes? Was this an apology? What secrets lie within the non- living voice of Hannah Baker?
The Book, “Thirteen Reasons Why,” by Jay Asher, is an ongoing, unexpected, suspenseful journey for Clay and the reader. There are secrets waiting to be told and confessions that are to be made. I believe this book can relate to a lot of teen lives. This book would definitely fall under the category, “Teen Drama.” And one thing I learned from reading this book was that life is precious, and you should take advantage of it while you have it.
