"Unwind" by Neil Shusterman

Unwind

Unwind by Neil Shusterman is about kids running away from their parents or guardians because they figure out that they are going into the unwind program. Unwind means that you get taken in when you are thirteen to eighteen and what they do is harvest your organs to give to people who need them. The government approves of this because if all of the child’s body parts are used they are technically still alive. This story takes place after the second civil war. The second civil war was about reproductive rights. The main three kids who are running away are Connor, Risa, and Lev. These kids are being unwound for different reasons. Connors’ reason is that his parents cannot control him very easily so they sign a unwind weaver for him. Risa is a foster child who isn’t talented enough to be kept alive. Lev doesn’t have a reason; he was born. My opinion of this book is that I enjoyed it a lot. This book was good and well written. Some of the strengths of this book I think are how they introduce the characters to the reader and tell the reader about the background of each character and why they are being unwound. I thought some weaknesses in the book is that in the middle of the book the pace was slow. I think that the characters that Neil Shusterman created are all believable. All the settings that he uses he explains very well, For example “Down by the interstate there’s a rest stop where truckers pull off the road for the night. This is where Connor goes. He figures he can slip in the back of a eighteen- wheeler, but he quickly learns that truckers keep their cargo locked”(11). The setting enhanced the story by a lot. The pace of this book was slow but it came to a great ending, I wanted to keep reading. I wound recommend this book to the type of readers who like Dystopian novels and to the type who like action books.-Griffin

  1. In Mrs. Lathrope's English class, this was one of the books you could choose to read. It was a tough decision to choose between this book and Hunger Games. I ended up reading Hunger games, which is an awesome book by the way, but I heard Unwind was very good. I think I might read it sometime.

  6. I remember reading this book in Ms. Schultz's Literature Development class in Seventh grade and I didn't really like it because it was weird how you would have to donate your body parts to someone else, so that they can live.

  7. In Mrs.Lathrope's English class last year I read the book "Hunger Games" instead of this one. I heard "Unwind" is pretty good though, so I may read it. It reminds of the book "House of the Scorpion," which is really fantastic. An interesting review
